5 RISK FACTORS OF OSTEOPOROSIS
Bones are one of the key components of the human body. Human skeleton consists 206 bones in total about 14% of the total body weight. They are connected by joints to form the frame of the body, protect internal organs, provide attachment points for muscles to facilitate physical activities, participate in red blood cell formation, store calcium and phosphorus.
Osteoporosis is also called a “silent disease”. Changes in bone strength often occur before we can perceive them! There are no symptoms in the early stages of osteoporosis. Many people don’t realize they have osteoporosis until a bone is broken.
Five negative lifestyle behaviors that increase osteoporosis risk:
1. Smoking or drinking too much alcohol may increases the risk of fractures.
2. Excessive weight loss leads to low body mass index (BMI), which is also an important risk factor.
3. Picky eaters are at risk of malnutrition. If you don’t get enough calcium, protein, and fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet, your body will take it from your bones to ensure normal cell function, which can lead to osteoporosis. Malnutrition is a major problem for the elderly, with a higher risk of falls and fractures, so make sure you are getting enough calcium and protein in your diet.
4. When the body doesn’t get enough vitamin D from sunlight or diet, you may be at risk of deficiency of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency can cause loss of bone density, osteoporosis, and broken bones. Low vitamin D levels are common among people with osteoporosis, especially older adults who are less active outdoors. Therefore, try to get outdoor activities for few minutes each day.
5. Lack of physical exercise can lead to bone and muscle loss. People who are inactive are more prone to hip fractures. Strengthening physical exercise, mainly resistance and aerobic exercise and persisting for a long time, will be beneficial to bones.
Older adults are at the highest risk for osteoporosis. In addition to exercising, you also need to pay attention to your diet and other living habits.
